Why do I need to submit a reconsideration request?
You need to submit a reconsideration request if you've received a manual penalty from Google. These are applied by a Google employee working alongside the Search Quality team who may believe you’re using unsanctioned SEO practices to try to manipulate the search engine results. To get a manual penalty removed, you need address the issue for which the manual penalty was applied (such as link cleaning) and then submit a reconsideration request to Google. The reconsideration is a request to have your site reviewed and any manual penalties you’ve received lifted.
What makes a reconsideration request successful?
For the request to be successful, Google will want to see three things. First, they want to ensure your site no longer violates the guidelines - that you've fixed the issue which caused the penalty in the first place. Second, they want to see some proof that you understand the issue and what you did to fix it. Third, they want to be convinced you’re committed to following the guidelines in the future.
Only once they approve your request will the penalty be removed and you can plan how to recover any rankings that may have been lost.
How does the reconsideration request process work?
Effectively, a reconsideration request starts from the moment you receive a ‘manual action’ notification in Google Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools) and lasts until Google decides you’ve corrected the issues identified with your site.
Most cases proceed like this:
- Receive a manual action notification
- Fix the issues they’re penalising you for
- Document your reconsideration request
- Submit your reconsideration request in Google Search Console
- Receive an acknowledgement from Google
- Request is rejected or approved
When you’re looking to fix your penalty, it’s vital for you to find a recovery team who can tell you when you’re ready to submit a request and understands how to get one approved – so you don’t want to have to submit too many times.
